Adjustable Back Strap or Tie String? A Fit Model's Guide

Adjustable Back Strap or Tie String? What Fit Model Competitors Need to Know

If you're ordering a Fit Model competition bikini, one of the first decisions you'll make is how the top closes in the back: a traditional tie string, or an adjustable back strap that hooks closed like a bra.

It's a small detail. It also happens to be one of the choices that affects your stage look, your comfort backstage, and how well your suit holds up over a long prejudging. Here's how to think about it.

What's the Difference?

A tie-string top closes with two long strings you tie behind your back — same as most swimwear. An adjustable back strap closes with a hook-and-eye closure and has sliders that let you shorten or lengthen the strap on the fly, the way a bra does.

Both work. But for Fit Model competitors specifically, the adjustable back strap solves a few problems that the tie string can't.

1. More Bust Support

This is the big one. Fit Model bottoms have more coverage than the Bikini division, which means the overall suit carries more fabric, and the top has to balance that visually and structurally. An adjustable strap distributes weight evenly across your back the way a proper bra band does, instead of relying on a knot to hold everything in place. The result: less shifting during your T-walk, no slow droop between prejudging and finals, and a top that actually stays where Lucy fit it.

If you've ever felt your tie string loosen halfway through a posing round, you already know why this matters.

2. A Cleaner Stage Look

Tie strings hang. Even when they're trimmed and tucked, they move when you do — and the judges' eyes follow movement. Two loose ends behind your neck and two more at your back mean four extra lines on a body the judges are evaluating for clean shape.

An adjustable back strap is one continuous, flat line across your back. No bow, no dangling tails, no asymmetry if one side comes loose. It photographs cleaner, too, which matters when your competition photos become your promo for the next year.

3. Easier On and Off

Tying a competition suit behind your own back, in a backstage bathroom, with full glam on and someone else's coach yelling about call times — it's a moment. The hook closure takes two seconds. You can do it without a mirror, without help, and without re-tying after every glute spray touch-up.

It also means you can get in and out of the suit cleanly for tan touch-ups or restroom breaks without disturbing the fit you set hours ago.

4. Adjustable in Real Time

This is the feature most competitors don't appreciate until they need it. Peak week is unpredictable. Water shifts. The flight to the show dehydrates you. The pump room changes your shape by the minute. A tie string locks you into whatever tightness you guessed at when you put the suit on.

The sliders on an adjustable strap let you tighten or loosen by a half-inch right before you step on stage — or between prejudging and finals if your shape has shifted. That's a real advantage, not a marketing line.

The Honest Tradeoff

The adjustable back strap is an upgrade, and it's priced as one. Some competitors also prefer the traditional tie-string look for personal reasons — it's lighter, it's what they've always worn, or they like the way the bow sits. Both are legitimate choices.

But if you're asking us which option we recommend for the Fit Model? It's the adjustable back strap. Nearly every issue we've ever helped a customer troubleshoot backstage — slipping, shifting, retying, asymmetry — gets solved by this one upgrade.
