How to Choose a Wellness Competition Suit (NPC & IFBB)

Wellness is not Bikini with more glute, and it is not Figure. Judges want a foundation of muscle that shapes the female body, full round glutes with a slight hamstring-glute separation, a little roundness in the delts, and a conditioned core. They do not want Figure density, squared glutes, Figure-style separation, graininess, or striations. The suit has to frame a larger lower body without cutting it off or riding into a thong.

NPC, NPC Worldwide, and the IFBB Professional League have not authorized any company as an official wellness-suit maker. Confirm current rules on NPC News Online.

What does the suit rulebook actually require?

From the Wellness competitor rules used by NPC and IFBB:

• Two-piece. The top is not connected to the bottom. That is different from many Figure constructions.
• The top follows the Bikini standard.
• The bottom must be V-shaped in the front, traditionally all material with no connectors, sitting high on the hips.
• The back follows the Bikini coverage standard. No thongs. No T-backs.
• You may wear a Bikini-style bottom with connectors. You are not scored differently for that choice.
• Suits may have crystals (“bling”).
• All swimsuits must be in good taste. Bring two suits to check-in. You will be scored down if the suit is not up to standard.
• High heels. Jewelry is allowed.

Check-in is not optional. Wellness competitors must wear the competition suit under their clothing to check-in. If the suit is not inspected, you do not compete. If you change suits between prejudging and finals and the new one fails, you leave the stage.

How is Wellness judged, and what should the suit do?

Judging is front and back poses, then an individual routine of front and back poses (up to 20 seconds), then callouts, then a model walk (front pose, 180° to a back pose, walk, turn, walk back). There is no Figure-style set of quarter turns as the whole class format.

That means:

Front. The V should sit high on the hip so the quad sweep and the hip-to-waist line stay readable. A front that drops lengthens the torso. Cups should hold without cutting a line across a developed delt.

Back. This class exists because of the lower body. A bottom that is too narrow will cut across a developed glute or ride. Traditional Wellness bottoms use more fabric, sit high, and skip connectors. A connector bottom is legal; it still cannot become a thong or T-back when you hit the pose.

Walk. The suit has to stay put through a 180° turn and a walk. Adjustable sides help through peak week. Practice in a posing suit of similar coverage. Do not wear the crystal stage suit through daily posing.

Color and crystals

Pick color against the tan, not against a locker-room mirror. Jewel tones and strong metallics hold up. Colors that sit next to the tan erase the outline of a larger glute from the table.

Crystals are allowed. Sparse rhinestones look like lint from the seats. Front and back both matter because the back pose is scored. Genuine Swarovski crystals have the clarity imitation stones do not under hard white light. That is a materials fact, not a placing. Fit Model is the class that bans stones. Wellness does not.

Do not put tanning product on the suit before the crystals have cured. Hand wash cold, lay flat, no machine, no iron.

Full custom crystal wellness suits typically take 4–6 weeks. The 2-week Stage-Ready program is mostly pre-engineered Bikini designs. In-stock ships the same day or next business day; most true Wellness suits are custom because the bottom is built for your glutes and hips. Call 727-784-0844 with the show date before you pay. FAQ

Is a Wellness suit the same as a Bikini? No. The top follows Bikini. The bottom is traditionally all material, V-front, high on the hips, Bikini-standard back, no thongs or T-backs. Connectors are optional.

Do you have to wear the suit to Wellness check-in? Yes. Wear it under your clothes. If it is not inspected, you do not compete.

Are crystals allowed in Wellness? Yes. Figure and Bikini also allow them. Fit Model does not.

Is the top connected to the bottom? Not in Wellness. Connected construction is common in Figure. Wellness tops are separate, Bikini-standard.
