Who these trunks are for
Choose matte lycra if you want the traditional, no-shine bodybuilding look. The matte finish reads completely flat under stage lighting and on camera — the suit disappears and your physique becomes the focal point. This is the safest, most conservative choice and the trunk most first-time and amateur competitors wear at NPC national qualifiers.
Matte lycra is also the most forgiving fabric we make for sweat and competition tan. It does not pick up shine the way hologram fabrics can, and small amounts of transferred tan typically do not show on stage.
Compare to our other bodybuilding trunks
All of our bodybuilding trunks use the same Rio cut with gather back — they differ in fabric:
- Matte Lycra (this trunk, $34.95): Traditional no-shine. Most popular. Best value.
- Mist Hologram ($44.95): Subtle, soft shine. Refined look that photographs cleanly.
- Shatterglass Hologram ($44.95): Aggressive shine. Maximum stage pop.
- Velvet ($49.95): Premium texture with glitter and tie-dye treatments.
- Snake Print ($49.95): Bold textured pattern. Unique stage statement.
- Custom: Made to order in any fabric and color we offer.

Frequently asked questions
Do these meet NPC and IFBB bodybuilding guidelines?
Yes. The Rio cut with gather back meets current NPC and IFBB open bodybuilding and 212 coverage requirements. Solid matte fabrics are stage-legal under current rules.
Why matte lycra instead of a hologram?
Matte lycra disappears under stage lights so the physique becomes the focal point. Hologram fabrics catch and throw light in ways that draw the eye to the suit. Both are stage-legal and used at every level of competition. Matte is more traditional and conservative; hologram is more attention-grabbing. Most first-time amateurs choose matte. Many returning competitors and Pro athletes choose hologram.
How fast do you ship?
Most in-stock men’s trunks ship same-day or next business day from Clearwater, Florida. If you have a show in less than a week, call us at 727-784-0844 before ordering and we’ll confirm what’s possible for your date.
Will the matte lycra show sweat or tan stains?
Matte black lycra is the most forgiving fabric we make for sweat and competition tan. It does not pick up shine the way hologram or wet-look fabrics can, and small amounts of transferred tan typically do not show on stage. For best results, apply tan well before putting the trunk on and let it fully dry.
Care
Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Lay flat to dry — never put competition fabric in the dryer. Avoid contact with self-tanner before it has fully dried.
